Cajun vs. Creole: What’s The Difference?

Ever since Andrew sent me this article I’ve wanted the theme to be Cajun vs. Creole.

Because it’s our last Tuesday Night Dinner in Wellington, until August, this week’s dinner is at our place again.

Wellington City Mission Food Bank

I found out today that the Wellington City Mission Food Bank is very short on some staples, they’ve listed Baked Beans, Tinned Spaghetti, Tinned Fish, Tinned Fruit, Tinned Vegetables, Cereals, Soup, Meals in a can and Spreads. If you can donate something on Tuesday then Liz has kindly offered to drop them into the Wellington City Mission for us.

Tuesdays around the world

The response to hosting dinners while we’re away has been great - we’ve got 8 hosts confirmed so that only leaves a few spots left - please email me if you want to host. I will email everyoneone that’s requested a dinner to arrange dates, if I haven’t already confirmed.

Also, I’ve recieved emails from people around the world offering Tuesday Night Dinners in other countries which I’m really excited about.

As you may have heard we will be in Europe from 20 May to 10 August 2012. Melissa has secured investment, from the UK, for her business Minimonos. so Grace and I are going along for the adventure.

That means we miss out on 12 Tuesday Night Dinners (in Wellington) so I need you to help keep Tuesday Night Dinners rolling while we are away.

Please let me know which Tuesday Night Dinner(s) you can host so I can get everything arranged. You don’t need to decide the theme now, all I want is to have 12 weeks booked up! We will host the Tuesday before and after.

Because I hadn’t organised anything for this week dinner is also at our place and the theme is Antipasto, Tapas, Fingerfood etc.

Right- skip the usual fallback favourites- cook or bring something you have never cooked (or taken away!) before. Get outside that culinary comfort zone.

Added feature: Bring unwanted cookbooks for a cookbook swap! (Leftovers and abandoneds will be donated.) Weirdest cookbook gets a prize!

Yesterday, unbeknowst to me, Grace had opened the atlas, at a random page, and selected the theme as Asian. So, it looks like Tuesday Night Dinner is in Roseneath this week.

Remember, there’s no such thing as cheating once you leave school - so takeaways are fine - especially for this theme.

We almost got our first non-themed Tuesday since Tuesday Night Dinners were born… but Sandip decided to have a theme after all:

I thought I’d like a theme on Tuesday, after all : Parsley, sage, rosemary and thyme. Just like the Simon and Garfunkel song.

It’ll be good to see dishes with only one of the above used in a significant way.

I just saw the forecast and it’s gale force south-easterly, hence that “hurricane hill” warning in the subject line.

The first musical theme for a Tuesday Night Dinner was arrived at, after much debate, over the Tuesday Night Dinner table - a compromise was reached with “Cajun Abba”.

This week’s theme is interesting too:

This week Peter and his new flatmate, Mark, are hosting Tuesday Night Dinners

The theme this week is “The sound of food, or musically inspired food”

That could be food that makes a sound (snap, crackle, pop, sizzle, for example) or a dish that reminds you of, relates to, is mentioned in, or is inspired by some song or other music you like. Or it could just be food that you enjoy when playing or listening to music.

Will have BBQ available for use as usual

Feel free to bring along any musical instruments and copies of song-sheets to share should you feel like doing a solo, sharing and song, or leading a jam

Yes, we know I kicked it out of home at a young age, but the tough love worked wonders. The whole ‘Travelling Circus’, as Raz described it, has been a huge success and dinners have continued to inspire and delight. Over the past year it has been a real pleasure for me to dine in your homes, meeting new people and making new friendships.

Some traditions have remained - the theme’s always Mexican for Tuesday Night Dinner’s birthday.

People have said I’m a bit of a bachelor, and I reserve judgement on that…haha - but it got me thinking about what food people cook when they are home alone. So…think about something nice you like to cook for when you are by yourself, and bring that - but you might want to make more than just 1 serving to share.
